Low expectations, lofty results

We decided to enroll in a Lumenos HRA primarily based on cost - the Lumenos plan had the same monthly payroll deduction as the former PPO, and we calculated that the out-of-pocket costs would be moderately lower. That was the extent of our expectations. We were in for a surprise.

First, somehow those health dollars became ours. We had a pot of money that we could use or save for medical care. So the smorgasbord approach to health care was over (all you can get for one co-pay). Who new how expensive cholesterol drugs were? Certainly not us. Being frugal former New Englanders, we decided to substitute diet and exercise for dollars (drugs). And it’s working. Our BMI has moved into the healthy range, increasing self-esteem and energy. Well, there is the downside of having to buy entirely new wardrobes.

Second, this health insurance company actually invited us to dinner. And then actually listened to what we said. There must be something in the water. I’m beginning to think that Lumenos is some sort of cult. Has anyone seen Dr. Mike jumping up and down on Oprah’s sofa? I think they’re turning me into a Lumenos poster child.

And so a change in health plan based primarily on cost has turned into a change to healthy lifestyles.

How have your Lumenos experiences been?

Vic is on to us! Regardless, I never opened my eyes to the true cost of an office visit until I worked for Lumenos. We had an MSA (not a true HRA) when I first started, but we still paid for services out of a bucket of employer-contributed cash. It was a real shock to discover that a simple office visit for your basic sports injury was upwards of $90. I came to "collect" injuries and other malfunctions, and then roll them all up into one visit. Of course, I am talking about things that could wait - your basic skin condition, wrist pain, poison ivy meds, etc. And I recall that my Dr. actually castigated me for bringing him too many maladies at once. But I did save a bundle of cash, and put some thought into the whole process.

I too have really watched my "bucket" of dollars this year, being a new Lumenos member.  My husband's doctor doesn't like it when he comes in with more than one problem, but I've told him that's too bad, because we're the ones paying for it.  Sounds to me like he only wants the office visit dollars.  We've also really sat back to consider if we thought the medical tests were necessary, or should we try and wait to see if things improved.  Same thing with prescriptions -- let's try the old, cheap drugs before those new, terribly expensive ones.  Or maybe OTC.  It's actually been kind of fun to see how far we can make that bucket of dollars go!  Thanks Lumenos!!

I am intrigued by the comments about changing diet and lifestyle in lieu of drugs. It seems like the best way to go. What were your best sources of information on what to eat for your conditions? I need a diet rich in calcium as I am supposedly suffering from osteoporosis. I did change my lifestyle significantly after the diagnosis. - more weight bearing exercise and much better diet. I would like more info on proper diet.
thanks

I feel like if you are fairly healthy that Lumenos has a great plan except the costs keep going through the roof.  Ours raised considerably last year and just took a hike again.

I was considering surgery on a bone spur but don't know if I can fit it in by the end of the year to take advantage of the 100% coverage. (It goes to 90% and you have to come up with the other 10% January 1st).
