No pain, no gain = no fun.

A healthy idea to think about:

You’re not training for the Tour de France, so when you exercise don’t push yourself to the point of collapse. You should be able to carry on a conversation while you work out. Yak it up, have fun, and you’ll gradually build strength and endurance.

Consult with your physician before beginning any exercise regimen.

It surprises me how fast a workout goes when you talk with an exercise buddy. At our workplace, our patients have to work out while we monitor them on telemetry. The patients love to talk with the staff and other heart patients because the "aerobic exercise" seems to fly by. Reading and watching television are other examples of time eaters. However, nothing makes me enjoy my workout more than listening to some great music on my ipod. You can tailor the music to your warm up, peak exercise and cool down.

I totally agree with Dani in the comment above.  Talking to somebody makes the time fly by when you're exercising.  The mind is a very powerful thing!  I truely believe that when we think we feel "tired" while exercising...a lot of the time it's just the fact that we're bored.  If we have something to take our mind off the time then we tend to exercise quite a bit longer.  This also helps us determine if we're working out too hard or maybe not hard enough.  We always tell our patients that they should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising.  If they can't talk, they need to slow down.  But if they're able to sing...they need to exercise a little harder.  This is a great "self-test" of intensity.

I can't agree more about working out with others.  It's the greatest way to get through a workout.  I seem to push myself much more when I am with a partner.  TIff - you may have hit it on the head, we get bored by ourselves!  I often do less when I am by myself, that's probably why. thanks...  And it so much easier to get up and go when someone is counting on you.

I like to exercise with my twin sister.  We are about at the same fitness level, and we always have something to talk about.  If she can't make it, my first choice is a book.  For me, that makes time fly too.

Good to know.  I always thought I was not getting a good enough workout when I exercise with others.  Maybe I am.  It just does not feel like working out because I am thinking about something other than how much longer I need to workout.

I like to jog.  I don't try to kill myself.  I just go at an even pace.
