Each team’s winning essay is posted below. There were a lot of terrific essays and it took us extra time to narrow it down to just these 3. To all Challenge participants, we hope you had a lot of fun and don’t forget to keep visiting Ignite and sharing ideas on any topic. There’s much more to come on Ignite – stay tuned! Submitted...
  • Short circuit temptation.

A healthy idea to think about:

Are the chocolate goodies in the office vending machine calling your name? When junk-food cravings light up, shut them down with your favorite healthy snacks, kept within easy reach. Stock your desk shelf with fruit, granola, or whole-wheat crackers.

  • Tuesday is the Big Day!

First of all - congratulations to everyone who completed the Get Fit Through the Holidays Challenge. We've heard from a lot of you and are psyched you had a lot of fun while staying healthier through the recent holidays. We've been sifting through all of the essays we received and you all did a great job. Give yourself a hand (c'mon, stand up)! But the time has come. So on Tuesday at 6:00 pm ET, we will be announcing the winners right here on Ignite! (We can barely contain ourselves.) Of course Read...
  • Facing Challenges

I had some challenges this week staying on my exercise plan, due to an out of town trip over the holiday weekend. I left Friday and returned Monday, but knowing this in advance, I made the effort to get my workouts in before Friday, then picked right back up Monday evening after I returned home. While I was away the only excercise I got was walking around a mall (which wasn't much, but hey it all adds up) because it was cold at the beach where I was staying, and there were no exercise facilities...
  • Deal a deck of chicken.

A healthy idea to think about:

Weight-loss experts dish out advice on portion control, but it only works if you understand proper portion sizes. Use this quick visual to gauge sizes: One serving of meat equals a deck of cards, a serving of fruit or vegetables is your fist and a portion of pasta resembles a scoop of ice cream.

  • Pressed for time? So is your doctor.

As a physician, I believe strongly that the doctor-patient relationship is the foundation of good health care. In fact, it will become more important as health consumers begin to have more knowledge and control of their health (with Lumenos plan consumers being in the forefront of this movement). However, if you’re like many health consumers, you may have felt that you don’t always get to spend enough time with your doctor. If so, you’re not alone, according to a new report. A study led by Dr. Ming...
  • Downsize your plate.

A healthy idea to think about:

Slimmer waists start with smaller plates that hold lesser heapings of pasta. Swap a dinner plate for a salad plate to keep your portion sizes within your dietary budget.

  • Keep health care (and Ignite) on your mind.

The Get Fit Through the Holidays Challenge is almost over and we're all waiting to see which team takes the grand prize. Congratulations to all of you who have stayed focused for the weeks during the challenge and good luck! Many of you have also expressed regret that the challenge is finally over -- but is it? As far as Ignite goes, we're only just getting started....there is so much more we plan to accomplish for the year and all of it will be focused around health care for you and your families...
  • Stay calm, get steamed.

A healthy idea to think about:

Whether you’re sitting down to fancy Italian or cheap Chinese, scan the menu for the words steamed, grilled, baked, or roasted. These are likely your healthiest choices — prepped with less fat than fried or sautéed dishes, yet every bit as tasty.

  • Winding Down the Challenge.. What Next ?

Wow, what a remarkable 12 weeks it has been! It never in a million years crossed my mind that I could exercise regularly from Halloween to New Years. Like most people, I always tried to begin a fitness regimen of some type in January to make up for those 5-10 pounds I had put on during the previous three months. But not until Lumenos introduced the Challenge had I ever considered trying. I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I signed up anyway and joined a team with someone I didn’t know. Turned out we...
  • If you skip, you’ll fall.

A healthy idea to think about:

When you skip a meal, your hunger grows from a cat’s meow to a lion’s roar. So when you finally pick up your fork, you’ll be more likely to shovel in extra mashed potatoes as well as binge on chips and cookies between meals. At the end of the day, your total calorie count will be higher than if you had eaten regular, modest meals.

  • Get the skinny on fatty fish.

A healthy idea to think about:

Eat high-fat fish twice a week and your arteries will love you for it. Choices like salmon, tuna, sardines and swordfish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which promote cardiovascular health.

  • Eat to beat prostate cancer.

A healthy idea to think about:

Take the offensive against prostate cancer with a low-fat, high-fiber diet, which can help lower men’s risk of the disease. Your closest allies should be soybean and tomato products and vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage. Other factors in the fight may include vitamins D and E, the mineral selenium and green tea.
