Womens hair loss and nail problems

2 years ago I had a hystorectomy (I still have one ovary).  But over the past few yearsI have been strugling to increase my hair it seems to be falling out faster and faster.  other than very thin hair it seems healthy.  Then my nails are very ridged up and down and even bumpy going side ways.  My doctor told me to try pre-natal vitimins, I can't see any improvement with them.  I take the omega 3 fatty acids, Adora Calcium and have added the Biotin just this year.  I don't want to be bald like my dad, my mom still has a wonderful full head of hair!  maybe these problems just go with the age!  Hmm

Gail, I had a hysterectomy when I was 27 due to cervical cancer.  I have both of my ovaries, but at age 56 have now gone through menopause. I have not had had any of the issues you write about as a result of my surgery.  You might ask your doctor to test your estrogen and testosterone levels, as well as your thyroid levels.  Any deficiency in those could cause thinning hair, and brittle nails.  BTW, when you take calcium, make sure it includes adequate amounts of vitamin D!

I feel your pain.  I had a hysterectomy 20 years ago (left one ovary) and I started getting thinner hair a few years later.  A dermatologist told me I actually don't have as many hair follicles.  I have learned to live with it, but as I age it is hard to hide the thinning areas.  I would love to have Oprah do a makeover on someone with very thin, fine healthy hair, just once!  I know that keeping it short and shaped seems to help.

Have your doctor check you for insulin resistance.  This is not something they will automatically test you for unless you request it.  These are 2 of multiple symptoms for this condition.  I have found out this is what's wrong with me when my best friend told me to be checked for this when I mentioned my symptoms to her.

Hope you figure it out and all gets handled for you. Smile
